How it was made
Four months on the coast
The brief
Wide Sky Films came to me with ninety-six hours of footage from one summer in a coastal town that loses a few feet of shore every year, and a director who wanted the film to feel like waiting for weather.
The edit
We cut for fourteen weeks. The assembly ran almost four hours; the version that locked is 48 minutes and keeps the long holds the director cared about. I graded it myself, cool and low in contrast, so the sky does the work.
What happened
Saltmarsh was selected for three festivals in its first season and was sold to a public broadcaster the following spring.
